How to Stop Reacting and Respond With Intention

Pause before you react

The idea

Reaction happens in seconds. Reflection takes a pause. The book's approach borrows from law enforcement: pause, assess, then act with intention.

Why it matters

Most regrets come from what we do in the first few seconds. A short, repeatable pause gives you back the choice.

Try it today

Build a three-breath pause. When you feel the reaction rise, take three slow breaths and ask one question: "Is this true, or is this the loop talking?"

Reflect

Think of a recent moment you reacted fast. What would a pause have changed?

For groups

  • Where in your life do you already have a routine that keeps you steady?
  • What makes pausing hard in the moment?
